Herbaceous perennials

Herbaceous perennials form one of the most important aspects of the nursery. Our aim is to offer a selection of plants that is wide enough to satisfy customers looking for tried and tested favourites through to rarer species and cultivars.

The over-riding objective is that the plants we are offer are  garden-worthy, being beautiful, hardy and reliable - we don’t seek to  stock a vast range of obscure species simply for their rarity, nor are  we content to simply rely on fast selling popular plants.

Most of our perennials are grown in half litre to 1.5litre-sized pots.   We try to provide plants which are suitable for most habitats from damp shade to dry and sunny conditions.  The following list also includes hardy bulb plants.

The list below is constantly being updated so please check regularly.  If the plant you are looking for is not listed please don’t hesitate to  phone or email to enquire as we sometimes don’t list a plant if we only  have a few available.

This list was prepared on 24 March 2011 and updated on 25 June 2011; not all plants listed will be immediately ready for sale so please check availability before making a special trip to the nursery.

Allium sphaerocephalum Drumstick allium. Rather striking plant. Good naturaliser and work to excellent effect in sparse drifts. Purple-crimson drumstick flower heads in June. H:50cm. Full sun. Hardy.

Aster  Professor Anton Kippenberg  Hardy, clump-forming perennial, with masses of mid-blue flowers in late summer.  Grow in moist but well drained soil in full sun or light shade. H: 35cm

Aster novae-angliae Purple Dome  Clump-forming perennial, with deep purple flowers in late summer.  Grow in full sun or light shade in any decent soil that is reasonably moist and well drained. Fully hardy. H:35cm

Aster turbinellus  Hardy clump forming perennial flowering throughout late summer.  Violet blue daisy flowers. Very attractive autumn aster. Full sun.  Well drained soil. H:120cm.

Cyrtomium fortunei   Japanese Holly Fern. Hardy perennial. Requires a moist, lightly shaded spot; found in rocky areas or woodland in central-eastern Asia. Bold green leathery foliage: 1.5 ft long.  Upright and evergreen fronds with scythe-shaped leaflets.

Echinacea purpurea Magnus  Exceptionally large-flowered with deep pink petals and rusty-orange 'cone'.  Useful for mid to rear border.  Fully hardy. H:1m

Echinops ruthenicus Platinum Blue  Vigorous, bold and fully hardy perennial, ideal for a sunny position in mid to rear of the border. Silvery stems, pale green foliage and steel blue spherical flowers in mid-summer. H: 90cm

Erysimum Constant Cheer Evergreen perennial wallflower. Orange-red flowers, later turning purple from late spring- summer. H: 30cm.  Full sun. Neutral-alkaline soil. Trim after flowering. AGM

Geranium Diva Clump-forming herbaceous perennial, with purple-red flowers in summer. Grows well in any decent soil in full sun or light shade.  H:60cm

Geranium clarkei Kashmir White Hardy, clump-forming perennial, suitable for both sunny or lightly shaded spots; loose habit, large open, white flowers from early to mid-summer.  Fully hardy.  H: about 30cm

Geranium pratense var. stewartianum Dusky Crûg Ground covering hardy perennial. Low growing. Small dark greeny-purple lobed leaves with soft pink flowers throughout the summer. H: 20cm.  Full sun or partial shade.  Well drained position.

Lychnis coronaria  Erect, wooly leaves form dense rosettes from which long stalks emerge in late summer bearing purple-red flowers. Full sun; fully hardy. H:80cm

Monarda  Blue Stocking Bergamot.  Clump-forming hardy perennial; violet-blue flowers from mid-summer to early autumn.  Grow in moister soils in full sun - mulch if necessary. Fully hardy. H: 90cm.

Monarda  Prärienacht Bergamot.  Bushy and clump-forming hardy perennial.  Whorls of purple-lilac flowers from mid- to late-summer. Prefers moister soils in full sun so mulch if necessary. H: 90cm

Phlox paniculata Franz Schubert  Clump forming perennial suitable for a part shade or sunny border. Mildew resistant form. Delicate pink with lighter eye. Hardy. H:80cm

Salvia pratensis Sweet Esmeralda Clump-forming perennial, with dark pink flowers from early to mid-summer.  Enjoys full sun and well drainedsoil. Fully hardy. H: 90cm

Salvia verticillata Alba Sun-loving hardy perennial, with bold foliage and spires of white flowers in summer.  Cut back to encourage a second flush.  Prefers drier soils. H: 90cm

Scabiosa caucasica Perfecta Blue Branched hairy perennial bearing solitary lavender blue flowers from summer to autumn. Fully Hardy. Prefers full sun, and well drained soil. H:70cm.

Sedum  Gooseberry Fool Autumn flowering fleshy perennial suitable for the front or middle of the border.  Greenish-soft yellow flowers in late autumn.  H:40cm. Full sun. Freely draining soil. Hardy.

Verbena bonariensis Elegant and stately plant for rear of border with narrow, stiff and erect stems bearing dense pink-purple flowerheads throughout summer into autumn. Hardy. Full sun. H:1.5m

Verbena hastata Rose American Blue Vervain. Large and fully hardy perennial from North America. Terminal panicles of pale pink flowers from early to late summer - cut off spent flowering stems. Prefers full sun. H:1.5m

Veronica spicata Red Fox Mat-forming  perennial, with deep pink to red flowers from early through to late summer.  Prefers moist but well drained soil in full sun or light shade. Fully hardy. H: 30cm

Acanthus hungaricus

Imposing architectural perennial with dark green deeply lobed leaves (winged midribs between lobes). Spires of pink flowers with purple bracts in summer.  Deep soil and sun or part shade.  Fully Hardy. H:1m

Acanthus spinosus

Vigorous clump forming perennial with spectacular arching spiny dark green leaves. Flowering stem up to 1.5m - purple flower bracts and white inner corolla. Well drained soil. Full sun or partial shade. Hardy.

Achillea 'Apple Blossom'

Sun-loving hardy perennial that is easy to grow and will thrive in any decent soil in full sun. Fflat flowerheads in soft pink in early summer.  Fully hardy.  H: 40cm

Achillea 'Credo'

One of the best of the new Achiilea introductions, recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Tall, at around 120cm, with richly creamy-yellow flowers in early summer.  Best in full sun; cut back to encourage repeat flowering. Fully hardy.

Achillea 'Mondpagode’ (Moon Pagoda)

Vigorous hardy herbaceous perennial suitable for a freely draining sunny site. Flowerheads light yellow cream in bud opening to creamy white. Soft grey tinged leaves. H:80cm. Cut back after flowering for repeat flowering.

Achillea 'Walther Funcke'

Clump forming perennial with dissected greyish leaves. Bright orange-terracotta plates of flowers throughout the summer. Very striking. H:60cm. Hardy. Full sun.

Achillea ageratifolia

Unusual form of achillea, forming a low growing mat of silvery foliage, and bearing large solitary white flowers on short stems.  Best in full sun, would make a lovely addition to an alpine garden. Fully hardy. H: 15cm

Achillea millefolium 'Dark Lilac Beauty'

Fully hardy perennial; Very free flowering with flat sprays of tiny dark pink  flowers throughout summer. Prefers full and moist but well drained soil. H: 60-80cm

Achillea millefolium 'Red Velvet'

Clump forming perennial suitable for a sunny dry border (prefers a bit of moisture but is fairly drought tolerant). Dark rosy-red florets that don't fade.  H:50cm.

Achillea nobilis 'ssp. Neilreichii'

Extremely handsome herbaceous perennial with finely dissected grey green foliage. Plates of cream flowers in summer. H:50cm. Hardy. Full sun. Well drained soil.

Achilea ‘ Taygetea’ Attractive clump forming evergreen perennial with greyish leaves. Pale creamy yellow flowerheads in corymbs 5-10cm across are borne throughout summer. Prefers full sun and decent drainage. H:60cm.

Agapanthus ‘Gayle’s Lilac’

Lily of the Nile.  A relatively compact form with soft lilac coloured flowers in midsummer.  Probably best in a pot, and overwintered in a cold greehouse/coldframe. H: 50cm

Agapanthus ‘Sea Coral’

Lily of the Nile.  Fully hardy perennial, ideal for a sunny spot in moist but well drained soil, or in a pot. Compact, with drooping white flowers in early sumer that flush coral-pink with age.  Evergreen foliage. H: about 60cm

Agapanthus africanus 'Blue Triumphator'

Deciduous strap leaved late flowering perennial. Large pale blue flower umbels in mid-late summer. H:80cm. Frost hardy. Full sun. Well drained soil.

Agapanthus campanulatus

Tall agapanthus, ideal for a hot, dry sunny border.  Rounded umbels of blue flowers on strong stems. Attractive narrow grey-green leaves. Deciduous. H:60-120cm.

Agapanthus comptonii

Ideal for a large container or a sheltered border, this evergreen plant will produce umbels of pale blue flowers, with darker blue markings in early summer. Best in full sun and moist but not water-logged soil. H: up to 1m

Agapanthus ‘Lillput’

Unusual dwarf deciduous agapanthus, with small strap like mid green leaves. Small dark blue flower umbels in mid-late summer. H:40cm. Full sun. Well drained soil. Hardy.

Agapanthus ‘Luna’

Ajuga reptans 'Catlin's Giant'

Excellent ground cover plant with evergreen purple-green leaves. 10 cm blue-purple flower spikes in spring. Hardy. H:10cm. Shade-semi shade.

Alchemilla epipsila

Ladies Mantle compact version of.  Bright acid green flower panicles throughout summer.  H:40cm.  Tolerant of most conditions.  (Smaller version of A. mollis.)

Alchemilla fulgens

Spreading rhizomatous perennial, with attractive lobed leaves and yellow green flowers throughout summer. Less invasive than its cousin A. mollis. Moist soil and full sun or part shade. Good ground cover. H:30cm

Alchemilla mollis

Vigorous and spreading perennial that will self-seed freely; good ground cover.  Light green foliage offsets tiny yellow/lime green flowers.  Full sun and fully hardy.

Allium ursinum

Wild garlic. Native hardy perennial, found in damp and shady woodlands. Clusters of white flowers in spring/early summer after foliage withers.  H;  40cm

Alstromeria psittacina ‘Royal Star

Parrot Lily. Clump forming perennial, vigorous once established. Light green leaves with white margins contrast well with the dark red flowers in summer. Good for cutting. Full sun. H:75cm. Hardy.Anemone multifdia

Allium sikkimensis (Syn. A. thibetica)

Nodding umbels of small bell-shaped bright blue flowers in May and June. Fully hardy. H: 25cm

Anemone palmatum

Lovely late spring flowering perennial with dainty dissected leaves. Large pale lemon flowers.  H:15cm. Semi shade preferred.

Anemone sylvestris

Shade loving, hardy, clump-forming perennial, most at home in moist and partly shady conditions. Delicate white-cream flowers in spring.  H:25cm

Anemone x hybrida 'Honorine Jobert'

Lovely single white flower, with bright yellow centre, in late summer-autumn. Clump forming and vigorous.  H:1m. Prefers partial shade. Well drained soil. Hardy.

Anemone x hybrida 'Konigin Charlotte'

Bold, clump-forming hardy perennial that will produce masses of pale pink semi-double flowers in mid to late-summer.  Very garde-worthy and well recommneded. H: about 75cm

Anemone x hybrida 'September Charm'

Fully hardy and clump-forming perennial, noted for numerous large pale pink flowers in late summer.  Suitable for either a shady or sunny spot.  H:90cm

Anthericum ramosum

Rhizomatous perennial preferring full sun and well drained soil. Grass-like deep green leaves. Bears white, star shaped flowers in mid summer. Fully hardy. H:36cm.

Aquilegia  'Blue Star'

Large flowered columbine, suitable for semi shade or sun.  Blue flowers with a creamy white centre early in summer. H:1m.

Aquilegia  'White Star'

Shade loving hardy perennial. Self seeds readily.  Impressive specimen with large white and cream flowers to at least 1m in height.

Aquilegia skinneri

A rarely offered and very garden-worthy wild species from the southern USA.  Requires a warm sunny spot. Attractive lobed leaf. Brilliant yellow flowers with long red spurs. Fully hardy. Full sun. H:70cm.

Aquilegia vulgaris 'William Guiness'

Dramatically deep purple and white flowers, flowering freely in early summer; cut back to encourage second flush.  Columbines prefer a little shade, being woodland plants by nature, but are otherwise very robust. Fully hardy.

Artemisia absinthium 'Lambrook Silver'

Clump-forming hardy perennial, with deeply divided silvery foliage and grey-yellow flowers in late summer.  Full sun and well drained or even dry soil preferred. H+W:75cm

Artemisia ludoviciana 'Silver Queen'

Clump-forming, with silver-green downy foliage and cream-brown flowers in late summer; excellent for cutting. Full sun and well drained or even dry soil preferred. H:1.2m

Aruncus dioicus

Goat's beard. Architectural plant, capable of reaching as much as 2.5m in height.  Much prefers moist conditions, preferably in the shade. Masses of tiny cream flowers on erect panicles in mid-summer. Fully hardy.

Asplenium scolopendrium 'Cristatum Group'

Evergreen fern, preferring partial shade and moist soil. Mid-green fronds with wavy margins.  Fully hardy. H: 60-70cm

Aster  'Little Carlow'

Hardy late flowering perennial.  Masses of exquisite violet-blue single flowers in early Autumn-late Autumn.  H:50cm. Full sun.

Aster novi-belgii ‘Little Pink Beauty’

Hardy clump forming perennial offering late colour for the front of the border.  Clear pink flowers September-October. H:40cm. Full sun. Well drained soil.

Aster  'Tonga'

Sun-loving hardy perennial that will bring a welcome splash of colour to the garden from mid-summer onwards.  Very easy to grow in any decent soil,. Double mid purple flowers. H: about 40cm.

Very long flowering sun-loving hardy perennial, with bright lavender blue flowers from July to October. Best in well drained but not too dry soil. Fully hardy. H: 70cm

Aster divaricatus

Hardy rhizomatous perennial from eastern USA. Noted for dark purple stems and clusters of white/yellow flowers in late summer. Fully hardy. Sun/partial shade. H:60cm

Hardy clump forming perennial suitable for sun or semi shade.  Late flowering. Front of border. Compact masses of white flowers. H:30cm.

Athyrium niponicum 'var. pictum'

Japanese Painted Fern. Deciduous and fully hardy fern. Beautiful silvery-grey to mid-green leaves.  Spreads by rhizomes and prefers a sheltered and lightly shaded spot. AGM. Hieght: 20-30cm

Bergenia 'Baby Doll'

Clump forming hardy perennial with large green-bronze leaves. Very soft baby pink flowers in early spring.  H:40cm. Humus rich soil. Full sun or partial shade. Hardy.

Caltha leptosepala

Attractive low growing herbaceous perennial suitable for a damp soil.  Found wild in western North America. Pure white flowers with yellow centre.  Dark green pointed leaves. H:20cm. Hardy.

Campanula alliariifolia

Ivory Bells. Clump forming with basal leaves. Leafy stems bearing pendent tubular white flowers from midsummer to autumn. Hardy. H:60cm. Sun or partial shade. Moist but well-drained soil preferred.

Large, erect hardy perennial, with pale blue to white flowers growing along the upper length of the stems. Ideal for dappled shade or full sun, plant to mid- or rear of border. Native to N. America. Fully hardy. H: up to 1.8m

Clump forming erect perennial which prefers shade and a spot of moisture. White bell flowers with linear lobed petals in summer. H: 1m. Fully hardy.

Campanula trachelium 'var. alba'

Upright woody perennial, with short racemes of white flowers in mid- to late summer. Will tolerate light shade, prefers moist but well drained soil. Fully hardy. H: 80cm

Centaurea  'John Coutts'

Clump-forming and fully hardy perennial, with large deep pink flowers, loosely resembling thistles, throughout the summer. Prefers full sun.  H:60cm

Centaurea dealbata

Mid to late summer flowering hardy perennial for a sunny location; large pink cornflower-like flowers. Deeply-incised foliage is an attractive feature in the garden throughout much of the year. H: 50-100cm

Centaurea montana

Blue flowerheads give rise to red-violet florets from late spring to mid-summer, borne on dense woolly stems.  Moist but well drained soil, fully hardy. H: 45cm; W:60cm.

Centranthus ruber 'coccineus'

Clump-forming and fully hardy perennial with somewhat fleshy leaves and dense cymes of rich red  flowers throughout summer. Self-seeds freely. H: 1m

Ceratostigma plumbaginoides

Hardy plumbago.  Fully hardy, woody perennial. Bright blue flowers in late summer. Best in full sun and reasonably well drained soil.  Cut back hard each spring to encourage new growth and lots of flowers. H: about 30cm

Chaenorhinum origanifolium 'Blue Dreams'

Low-growing hardy perennial for a sunny and well drained position - good for tumbling over low walls for example. Lilac-blue flowers with dark veins and a small yellow lip in summer.

Cichorium intybus 'Roseum'

Clump forming perennial with leaves at the base of the plant. Long stems bear pink dandelion-like flowerheads in summer. H:1.2m. W:60cm. Hardy. Sun. Well-drained.

Cirsium rivulare 'Atropurpureum'

Although easily dismissed as merely an ornamental thistle, the small and intensely dark red flowers that seemingly float over the border on tall stems belie the value of this plant in a sunny bed. Fully hardy. H:1m

Spreading fully hardy perennial with light green and fern-like foliage.  Light blue flowers in spring and early summer contrast superbly.  Prefers dappled shade. H:15cm.

Spreading fully hardy perennial with deep-purple and fern-like foliage.  Sky-blue flowers in spring and early summer contrast superbly.  prefers dappled shade. H:15cm.

Crambe cordifolia

Very large and architectural plant; Large glossy green basal leaves, tall flowering stems in summer with masses of small white flowers.  Prefers full sun. H:2m

Cynara cadunculus

Cardoon. Noble perennial with massive silver-grey leaves and large thistle-like flowers. Similar to a globe artichoke where the large edible flower buds are eaten as an hors d'oeuvre. H:2m. Full sun.

Darmera peltata

Lovely clump forming perennial for damp shady garden. Pink-white spheres on erect flower stalks occur in mid spring followed by large lobed attractive leaves. Hardy. H:40cm. W:80cm.

Delphinium sutchuenensis

Dianthus 'Coconut Sundae'

Well-scented pink. Grey green leaves. White flowers with dark magenta centre.  Hardy.  Full sun and well drained soil preferred. H: 25cm.

Dianthus 'Gold Fleck'

Pink.  Hardy perennial for a sunny and well-drained spot.  Compact mounds of foliage, with fragrant pink frllled double flowers in early to mid-summer. Fully hardy.  H:20cm.

Dianthus superbus

Clump forming hardy perennial. Strongly fragrant flowers in summer with deeply-cut petals of pale-lilac-pink. H:40cm. Full sun. Well drained soil.

Dicentra spectabilis 'Alba'

Substantial hardy perennial, at home in dry shade, with feathery foliage and masses of white 'bleeding heart' flowers in early summer.  Fully hardy.  H: 60cm

Dictamnus albus

Burning bush.  Clump-forming perennial with lemon-scented leaves and attractive, pink flowers in summer.  In hot weather, dry stems/seed heads burn readily! Fully hardy. H: 90cm

Dictamnus albus albiflorus

Burning bush.  Striking perennial for late spring-early summer.  Clump forming.  White lemon scented flowers in early summer. H:90cm.  Full sun. Well drained soil.

Dierama reynoldsii

Dicksonia antarctica

Woolly Tree Fern.  A tree-like fern capable of growing to 6m in its native habitat in E. Australia, but much less in the UK. These plants have been raised from cultivated European stock and NOT taken from wild, endangered  populations.    Hardy to at least -5°C

Dryopteris atrata

The Shaggy Shield Fern.  The mature fronds are dark green, slightly hairy and unfold resembling the shape of an elephant's trunk. Requires well drained soil, shade to partial sun and moisture. Very hardy. H:90cm.

Dryopteris goldiana

Goldie's Shield Fern. Stout, hardy evergreen fern, with fronds up to 80cm in length and 35cm in width, edged with gold.  Prefers shade and reliably moist soil.

Digitalis ferruginea

Striking perennial foxglove. Rusty-brown-yellow flowers on tall flower spikes in summer. H:2m. Shade preferred. Well drained soil. Hardy.

Digitalis grandiflora

Perennial or sometimes biennial foxglove with glossy leaves and racemes of large and well separated yellow flowers in early summer. Ideal for a sunny or lightly shaded moist spot.  Fully hardy. H: 1m.

Echinacea purpurea Magnus

Exceptionally large-flowered with deep pink petals and rusty-orange 'cone'.  Useful for mid to rear border.  Fully hardy. H:1m
