Herbaceous perennials

Herbaceous perennials form one of the most important aspects of the nursery. Our aim is to offer a selection of plants that is wide enough to satisfy customers looking for tried and tested favourites through to rarer species and cultivars.

The over-riding objective is that the plants we are offer are garden-worthy, being beautiful, hardy and reliable - we don’t seek to stock a vast range of obscure species simply for their rarity, nor are we content to simply rely on fast selling popular plants.

Most of our perennials are grown in half litre to 1.5litre sized pots.   They are raised from seed, cuttings, divisions and newly bought in stock plants.  We try to provide plants which are suitable for most habitats such as damp shade to dry sunny conditions. The following list also includes hardy bulb plants.

The list below is constantly being updated so please check regularly.  If the plant you are looking for is not listed please don’t hesitate to phone or email to enquire as we sometimes don’t list a plant if we only have a few available.

This list was prepared on 6 January 2010; not all plants listed will be immediately ready for sale so please check availability before making a special trip to the nursery.

Acanthus hungaricus

Imposing architectural perennial with dark green deeply lobed leaves (winged midribs between lobes). Spires of pink flowers with purple bracts in summer. Deep soil and sun or part shade.  Fully Hardy. H:1m

Acanthus spinosus

Vigorous clump forming perennial with spectacular arching spiny dark green leaves. Flowering stem up to 1.5m - purple flower bracts and white inner corolla. Well drained soil. Full sun or partial shade. Hardy.

Achillea 'Apple Blossom'

Achillea 'Credo'

One of the best of the new Achiilea introductions, recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Tall, at around 120cm, with richly creamy-yellow flowers in early summer.  Best in full sun; cut back to encourage repeat flowering. Fully hardy.

Achillea 'Mondpagode (Moon Pagoda)'

Vigorous hardy herbaceous perennial suitable for a freely draining sunny site. Flowerheads light yellow cream in bud opening to creamy white. Soft grey tinged leaves. H:80cm. Cut back after flowering for repeat flowering.

Achillea 'Walther Funcke'

Clump forming perennial with dissected greyish leaves. Bright orange-terracotta plates of flowers throughout the summer. Very striking. H:60cm. Hardy. Full sun.

Achillea millefolium 'Dark Lilac Beauty'

Fully hardy perennial; Very free flowering with flat sprays of tiny dark pink  flowers throughout summer. Prefers full and moist but well drained soil. H: 60-80cm

Achillea millefolium 'Red Velvet'

Clump forming perennial suitable for a sunny dry border (prefers a bit of moisture but is fairly drought tolerant). Dark rosy-red florets that don't fade. H:50cm.

Achillea nobilis ssp. Neilreichii

Extremely handsome herbaceous perennial with finely dissected grey green foliage. Plates of cream flowers in summer. H:50cm. Hardy. Full sun. Well drained soil.

Aconitum cammarum 'Stainless Steel'

Monkshood. Hardy herbaceous perennial suitable for a semi shaded position. Strong upright grower with branching spikes of steel blue hooded flowers from July-August. Deeply divided foliage. H:1m. Poisonous if eaten.

Aconitum napellus 'Albiflorus'

Rounded deeply lobed green leaves. White flower racemes in mid summer. Hardy. H:1m. Tolerant but prefers moist partial shade.

Adenophora aurita

Clump forming perennial with grey-green basal leaves.  Flower stalks bearing pale lilac-purple bell shaped flowers along the stems in mid to late summer. Delicate and attractive.  Full sun or partial shade.  H:60cm.

Agapanthus 'Ice Lolly'

Lily of the Nile.  Clump forming hardy perennial for freely draining sunny position. Strap like mid green leaves. Medium sized pure white flower umbels mid-late summer on tall stem. H:60-80cm.

Agapanthus 'Peter Pan'

Dwarf Lily of the Nile.  Umbels of blue flowers in mid-late summer.  Very well suited to a pot as it is compact and, when pot-bound, very floriferous. Hardy and can be planted in the garden.  H: about 30cm

Agapanthus 'Sea Coral'

Lily of the Nile.  Fully hardy perennial, ideal for a sunny spot in moist but well drained soil, or in a pot. Compact, with drooping white flowers in early sumer that flush coral-pink with age. Evergreen foliage. H: about 60cm

Agapanthus 'Snowball'

Hardy perennial requiring a freely draining site with lots of sun. Low growing dark green lance shaped leaves and white flower umbels in late summer.  H:50cm.

Agapanthus africanus 'Blue Triumphator'

Deciduous strap leaved late flowering perennial. Large pale blue flower umbels in mid-late summer. H:80cm. Frost hardy. Full sun. Well drained soil.

Agapanthus campanulatus

Tall agapanthus, ideal for a hot, dry sunny border.  Rounded umbels of blue flowers on strong stems. Attractive narrow grey-green leaves. Deciduous.  H:60-120cm.

Agapanthus comptonii

Ideal for a large container or a sheltered broder, this evergreen plant will produce umbels of pale blue flowers, with darker blue markings in early summer.  Best in full sun and moist but not water-logged soil. H: up to 1m

Agastache rupestris

Ideal for the hottest part of the garden.  Pleasantly aromatic foliage, spires of rose-orange flowers from June to September if dead-headed regularly . Also know as 'Apache Sunset'.  Perennial and frost-hardy. 60cm

Alcea officianalis

Large grey leaved perennial suitable for back of the border. Very pale pink, almost lavender-white flowers in late summer. H:1.2m.  Full sun. Hardy.

Alchemilla epipsila

Ladies Mantle compact version of.  Bright acid green flower panicles throughout summer.  H:40cm.  Tolerant of most conditions.  (Smaller version of A. mollis.)

Alchemilla mollis

Vigorous and spreading perennial that will self-seed freely; good ground cover.  Light green foliage offsets tiny yellow/lime green flowers.  Full sun and fully hardy.

Anemone leveillei

Low growing early summer flowering anemone. Will form clumps in moist and lightly shaded positions. Kidney-shaped basal leaves. Delicate white flowers with green centres and purple anthers. Hardy. H:50cm. .

Anemone sylvestris

Shade loving, hardy, clump-forming perennial, most at home in moist and partly shady conditions.  Delicate white-cream flowers in spring. H:25cm

Anemone x hybrida 'September Charm'

Fully hardy and clump-forming perennial, noted for numerous large pale pink flowers in late summer.  Suitable for either a shady or sunny spot.  H:90cm

Anthericum ramosum

Rhizomatous perennial preferring full sun and well drained soil. Grass-like deep green leaves. Bears white, star shaped flowers in mid summer. Fully hardy. H:36cm.

Antirrhinum  'Bronze Dragon'

Snapdragon.  Perennial suitable for full sun and moist but well drained soil.  Dark purply-bronze leaves.  Flowers are pale pink with darker pink centre.  H:50cm.

Aquilegia  'Ruby Port'

Aquilegia chrysantha

Attractive, large  and unusual columbine from south-western USA with soft golden-yellow flowers throughout the summer. Fully hardy.  Grow in partial shade or full sun. Moist soil. H:1m.

Artemisia absinthium 'Lambrook Silver'

Clump-forming hardy perennial, with deeply divided silvery foliage and grey-yellow flowers in late summer.  Full sun and well drained or even dry soil preferred. H+W:75cm

Artemisia ludoviciana 'Silver Queen'

Clump-forming, with silver-green downy foliage and cream-brown flowers in late summer; excellent for cutting. Full sun and well drained or even dry soil preferred. H:1.2m

Aruncus dioicus

Goat's beard. Architectural plant, capable of reaching as much as 2.5m in height.  Much prefers moist conditions, preferably in the shade. Masses of tiny cream flowers on erect panicles in mid-summer. Fully hardy.

Asplenium scolopendrium 'Cristatum Group'

Evergreen fern, preferring partial shade and moist soil. Mid-green fronds with wavy margins.  Fully hardy. H: 60-70cm

Aster  'Little Carlow'

Hardy late flowering perennial.  Masses of exquisite violet-blue single flowers in early Autumn-late Autumn.  H:50cm. Full sun.

Aster  'Tonga'

Sun-loving hardy perennial that will bring a welcome splash of colour to the garden from mid-summer onwards.  Very easy to grow in any decent soil,. Double mid purple flowers. H: about 40cm.

Aster diplostephioides

A most unusual form of aster, late flowering and bearing very large lilac-coloured flowers with deeply recurved petals with a prominent coppery flower centre akin to the cone flowers. Native to Kashmir to China. Fully hardy.  H: 50cm

Aster divaricatus

Hardy rhizomatous perennial from eastern USA. Noted for dark purple stems and clusters of white/yellow flowers in late summer.  Fully hardy. Sun/partial shade. H:60cm

Aster novae-angliae ''Septemberrubin''

Vigorous hardy perennial suitable for full sun at the back of a border.  Flowering in late summer.  Abundant purple-red flowers in late summer. H:1.6m

Aster novi-belgii 'Little Pink Beauty'

Hardy clump forming perennial offering late colour for the front of the border.  Clear pink flowers September-October. H:40cm. Full sun. Well drained soil.

Aster novi-belgii 'Schneekissen (Snowcushion)'

Hardy clump forming perennial suitable for sun or semi shade.  Late flowering. Front of border.  Compact masses of white flowers. H:30cm.

Aster turbinellus

Hardy clump forming perennial flowering throughout late summer.  Violet blue daisy flowers. Very attractive autumn aster.  H:120cm.  Full sun. Well drained soil.

Astilbe japonicum 'Montgomery'

Hardy perennial, adapted to moist and cool conditions, with plumes of brilliant red flowers over fine green-red bristly  foliage in summer.  Fully hardy.  H: 60cm

Astilbe japonicum 'Vesuvius'

Vigorous clump forming perennial suitable for moist shade. Very dark red leaves and leaf stalks.  Clear red flower spikes in mid-late summer. H:60cm. Hardy.

Astilbe x arendsii 'Snowdrift'

Clump-forming perennial, happier in moist soil and partial shade. Pure white flower panicles over dark green foliage in midsummer. Hardy. H:70cm.

Astrantia major 'Abbey Road'

Clump forming perennial with lobed mid green leaves. Deep red flowers throughout summer. H:60cm. Full sun or partial shade. Well drained soil. Fully hardy.

Herbaceous clump forming perennial suitable for a well drained sunny or part shady spot. Rose pink flowers with paler pink outer floret in summer. H:50cm.

Athyrium niponicum 'var. pictum'

Japanese Painted Fern. Deciduous and fully hardy fern. Beautiful silvery-grey to mid-green leaves.  Spreads by rhizomes and prefers a sheltered and lightly shaded spot.  AGM. Hieght: 20-30cm

Clump forming hardy perennial with large green-bronze leaves. Very soft baby pink flowers in spring. H:40cm.  Humus rich soil. Full sun or partial shade. Hardy.

Bergenia x schmidtii 'Silberlicht'

A really good, robust hardy perennial, preferring light shade, bearing big fist-sized clumps of  white flowers with pinkish stems in late winter to spring. Handsome glossy foliage. H: about 40cm

Boltonia asteroides 'var. latisquama 'Nana''

Airy herbaceous perennial flowering very late in the summer to autumn. Blue green thin leaves and pale pink-lilac daisy-like flowers floating above the foliage summer. Full sun and well drained soil. Fully hardy. H:70cm

Brunnera macrophylla 'Betty Bowring'

Clump forming perennial for the shady garden. Heart shaped leaves and small pure white flowers throughout the spring. H:30cm. Hardy.

Brunnera macrophylla 'Hadspen Cream'

Clump forming perennial. Cream-green variagated leaf. Tiny forget-me-not flowers in spring.  Full or dappled shade.  Hardy.  Moist soil. H:10cm.

Calamagrostis brachytricha

Ornamental grass - 'Diamond Grass'.  Decorative with large, delicate and distinctively shaped flowerheads in late summer to autumn, with a warm pink tint.  Best in full sun and well drained soil. Fully hardy. H: about 80cm

Campanula alliariifolia

Ivory Bells. Clump forming with basal leaves. Leafy stems bearing pendent tubular white flowers from midsummer to autumn. Hardy. H:60cm. Sun or partial shade. Moist but well-drained soil preferred.

Campanula lactiflora 'alba'

Gorgeous clump forming perennial. Conical open panicles of pure white bell flowers in summer. Prefers partial shade. Moist soil. H:1.3m. Hardy.

Tall, fully hardy, with soft pink flowers from early summer to autumn. Vigorous clump forming perennial. Moist but well drained soil; light shade for best colour. H: 1.2-1.5m; W: 60cm.

Clump-forming and fully hardy perennial, with large deep pink flowers, loosely resembling thistles, throughout the summer. Prefers full sun.  H:60cm

Centaurea dealbata

Mid to late summer flowering hardy perennial for a sunny location; pink cornflower-like flowers. Deeply-incised foliage is an attractive feature in the garden throughout much of the year. H: 50-100cm

Cerinthe major 'purpurescens'

Hardy annual which self seeds and therefore acts like a perennial. Grey-green leaves, oval in shape. Bears attractive nectar rich purple bell shaped flowers.  Easy to grow amongst shrubs or perennials. H:40cm.

Chelone lyonii 'Pink Temptation'

Sturdy and compact hardy herbaceous perennial. Leaves are broad, deep green and slightly glossy, whilst flowers, in mid to late summer are brilliant pink - a great combination.  Prefers full sun and good soil.  H: 40cm

Hardy shrubby perennial suitable for full sun or some shade. Double apricot flowers fading to pale pink in late summer. H:60cm.  Freely draining soil.

Highly fragrant woodland plant best suited to damp and shaded conditions.  White flowers in early summer  Fully hardy.  H: 25cm

Corydalis flexuosa 'Purple Leaf Form'

Spreading fully hardy perennial with deep-purple and fern-like foliage.  Sky-blue flowers in spring and early summer contrast superbly. prefers dappled shade. H:15cm.

Low growing sun loving perennial.  Attractive lobed leaves.  White flowers throughout the summer.  Creeping or hanging from crevices. Hardy. H:10cm. Full sun and freely draining soil.

Substantial hardy perennial, at home in dry shade, with feathery foliage and masses of white 'bleeding heart' flowers in early summer.  Fully hardy.  H: 60cm

Dicksonia antarctica

Woolly Tree Fern.  A tree-like fern capable of growing to 6m in its native habitat in E. Australia, but much less in the UK.  These plants have been raised from cultivated European stock and NOT taken from wild, endangered  populations.    Hardy to at least -5°C

Dierama pulcherrimum 'Guinevere'

Angels' Fishing Rod. Fabulous mid season hardy perennial suitable for a sunny border and moist soil.  Grassy evergreen foliage forming hummock. Spires smothered in white bell shaped flowers from late June-July.  H:80cm.

Digitalis parviflora

Chocolate Foxglove. An unusual foxglove from southern Europe. Dense candles of small brownish purple flowers in summer. Fully hardy. Tolerates most soils and prefers partial shade. H:60cm.

Dryopteris affinis 'Cristata'

Evergreen shuttlecock fern, with broad arching fronds. Prefers moist soil and partial shade.  Fully hardy. H: 1m

Dryopteris atrata

The Shaggy Shield Fern.  The mature fronds are dark green, slightly hairy and unfold resembling the shape of an elephant's trunk. Requires well drained soil, shade to partial sun and moisture.  Very hardy. H:90cm.

Dryopteris erythrosora

Semi evergreen hardy fern suitable for dry shade.  Young leaves are orange-brick red turning light-mid green. H:60cm.

Dryopteris goldiana

Goldie's Shield Fern. Stout, hardy evergreen fern, with fronds up to 80cm in length and 35cm in width, edged with gold.  Prefers shade and reliably moist soil.

Echinacea purpurea 'White Swan'

Attractive cultivar of the familiar 'cone flower' with recurved white ray florets with orange-brown discs.  Prefers full sun and deep moisture retaining soil. Give a welcome lift to the garden in mid to late summer. Fully hardy. H:60cm.

Epimedium  'Amber Queen'

Hardy rhizomatous perennial suitable for a cool shady spot preferably with a layer of leaf litter.  Evergreen. Heart shaped leaves. Spring flowering. Orange flowers opening to amber with lemon spurs. H:30cm.

Hardy perennial suitable for a woodland environment - semi shade and leaf litter. Pale lilac flowers in spring. Heart shaped evergreen leaves - slightly spined and pointed. Evergreen. H:25cm.

Hardy rhizomatous evergreen perennial suitable for leafy cool soil in shade or semi shade. Heart shaped leaflets. Native of central China.  Very striking pale pink flowers with a 2cm spur in Spring. H: 20cm.

Epimedium pinnatum 'subsp. Colchicum'

Fully hardy perennial well-suited to dappled and reasonably moist conditions: beneath deciduous trees, for example.  Delicate pale yellow flowers in spring, equally attractive foliage. H: about 30cm

Epimedium pubigerum

Hardy woodland perennial forming attractive clumps of green and russet foliage. Small yellow flowers are produced in spring with pink and white markings. Fully hardy. Foliage: 20cm; flowers: on stems up to 70cm.

Carpeting perennial suitable for moist shade. Gorgeous heart shaped leaves which have brownish-red markings in the spring. Clusters of crimson flowers with yellow spurs in Spring. H:30cm. Hardy.

Foxtail Lilly. Spectacular clump-forming perennial. White flowers in late spring-early summer in racemes of 90cm. H:1.2-2m. Grow in well-drained soil. Protect from wind. Hardy.

Spectacular. Foxtail Lily producing racemes of pink flowers up to  and over 1m in length. Origin, mountains of China. Prefers full sun and well-drained conditions. H:3m. Hardy.

Erigeron karvinskianus

Extremely free flowering, bearing small pink or white daisy-like flowers.  Prefers full sun and well drained soil with shade during midday. Fully Hardy. H:20-20cm.

Erodium chrysanthum

Compact sun loving perennial producing creamy yellow flowers throughout summer.  Fully hardy. H: up to 25cm

Erodium guttatum

A clump-forming hardy perennial that, in common with other Erodium, will flower over a very long period, bearing veined pale-lilac white flowers about 2.5cm across. Plant in full sun and in well drained soil.  H: about 10cm.

Eryngium agavifolium

Evergreen and clump forming. Rosettes of sword shaped toothed green leaves with thistle-like green/white flowerheads in summer. H:1.5m. Half hardy. Full sun. Well-drained soil.

Eryngium bourgatii 'Picos Blue'

Hardy perennial that will do well in a well drained and sunny location.  Noted for marbled foliage and, in summer, bright blue flowers with silver bracts.  H: about 60cm

Eryngium variifolium

Evergreen perennial with unusually well marked white and green marbled leaves. Silver blue stems and flowers. Hardy. Needs full sun and well drained soil. H:45cm.

Erysimum 'Constant Cheer'

Evergreen perennial wallflower. Orange-red flowers, later turning purple from late spring-summer. H: 30cm.  Full sun. Neutral-alkaline soil. Trim after flowering. AGM
