Roses

Roses add tremenduously to an English garden, whether planting as specimens or within herbaceous borders. These amazing plants are extremely varied, providing  a wealth of different flowers, leaves, stems and hips, giving so much colour and form to a garden from spring through to autumn and even winter.

Every year the nursery stocks a carefully chosen selection of shrub and climbing roses, offering a variety of characteristics and perfumes.

During 2011, most of our roses, grown in large deep pots, will be priced at £8.95 apart from Rosa mutabilis, R. ‘Bengal Beauty’ and the few ‘David Austin Varieties we stock, all priced at £12.00

 

Rosa 'Agnes'

Rugosa rose. Beautiful large fully double blooms of rich butter yellow.  Good scent. Summer flowering.  1.5mx1.2m. Canada 1922

Rosa 'Alba Maxima'

Alba Rose. An historic rose, also know, inter alia, as the 'White Rose of York' ; very fragrant white double flowers in summer.  Stunning grey green foliage. Disease free. European 15th Century

Rosa 'Alberic Barbier'

Lovely climbing rose with fully double quartered blooms of creamy white with a lemon tinted centre. Good scent. Free flowering.  Excellent variety. Suitable for a shady wall.  H: 4mx3.0m.

Rosa 'Alfred de Dalmas (syn. Mousseline)

Sweetly scented, repeat-flowering Moss rose. Pale pink flowers fade to creamy-pink. Relatively small so can kept in a pot; trim after each flowering. 1855

Rosa 'Alister Stella Gray'

Noisette Rose. Vigorous shrub with clusters of yellow-cream flowers. Repeat flowering and to a degree tolerant of shade; suitable for growing into trees. H: 4.5m

Rosa 'Aloha'

Climber. Large extremely fragrant blooms of deep rose pink with coral shadings.  Free flowering and healthy. A large shrub or short climber. Perpetual flowering. 3m x 1.8m. 1949

Rosa 'Awakening'

Climber. A very double sport of New Dawn giving a quartered appearance. Beautiful and highly fragrant. Repeat flowering. 5mx2.5m. 1935

Rosa 'Ballerina'

1937.Modern shrub. Clusters of small pale pink flowers with white centres. Very floriferous. Small hips in autumn. Perpetual flowering: 90cm x 90cm.

Rosa ‘Bengal Beauty’

A superb China rose. Constantly smothered in single light crimson blooms from May until the first frosts. Compact bushy habit suitable for a container. 60cm x 60cm.

Rosa 'Bleu Magenta'

Rambling rose. 1900. Fully double blooms of violet purple which fade to parma violet and then grey. Unusual and effective. A multiflora type with few thorns and bright green glossy foliage. Summer flowering. 3.6m x 3.0m

Rosa 'Blush Noisette (syn.Noisette Carnée)'

Climber. The original Noisette rose. Clusters of semi-double lilac pink blooms in clusters on a shortish climber. Richly scented. Plentiful healthy foliage.  Also makes a good large shrub. Continuous flowering. 2.1m x 1.2m. 1817

Rosa 'Bobbie James'

Arguably the best of the small flowered climbers, with masses of fragrant white flowers with golden stamens, followed by small orange-red hips.  H: 5m

Rosa 'Bonica'

Modern shrub.  Very healthy and freely flowering.  Clusters of full cupped blooms of clear pink with a light scent. Perpetual flowering. 1mx1m.

Rosa 'Cardinal de Richelieu'

Gallica rose.  Rich purple flowers with paler centres and green button eyes. Good scent.  Very floriferous. Summer flowering.   Size:1.5m x 1.2m.

Rosa 'Cecile Brunner'

Continuously flowering, this rose has been popular since its introduction in 1881.  Clusters of pale pink centered white flowers. Healthy, vigorous and largely thornless. H: 1m

Rosa 'Cecile Brunner Climbing'

As beautiful and floriferous as its excellent parent, but capable of climbing as much as 8m. Almost continuous clusters of pale pink centered white flowers

Rosa 'Celine Forestier'

Climbing rose. One of the most beautiful of the Noisettes. Large full quartered blooms of pale yellow with green button eyes.  Gorgeous tea fragrance and refined pointed pale green foliage.  Continuous flowering. 3m x 1.8m. 1842

Rosa 'Celsiana'

Damask rose. Shrub. Clusters of semi-double pale pink blooms with a strong fragrance. Good in semi-shaded position. Dense grey-green foliage. Summer flowering. 1.2mx90cm.

Rosa 'Commandant Beaurepaire'

Introduced 1874. Strongly scented pink flowers heavily splashed with purple and white. Vigorous and healthy.  H: 1.75m

Rosa 'Compassion'

Harkness 1973. Great climbing rose. Large H.T. shaped blooms of salmon pink with apricot orange. Excellent fragrance. Repeat flowering. 3m x 1.8m.

Rosa 'Coopers Burmese (syn. Cooperi)'

Climber. 1927.  Wonderful dark pointed and polished foliage acting as a perfect foil to the large single white blooms. Very healthy and vigorous. First grown in Ireland.  Needs a sheltered position. Summer flowering. 9mx6m.

Hybrid Musk. Repeated, moderately fragrant apricot-pink flowers in large clusters.  UK 1925

Rosa 'Cramoisi Superieur'

Introduced 1832. China Rose, almost continuously flowering with crimson blooms flecked white.  H: 1m

Rosa 'Crimson Showers'

1951. Trusses of semi-double crimson blooms. Long flowering season. Healthy and vigorous. A wichurana type. Summer flowering: 4.5m x 3.6m.

Rosa 'Cupid'

Climber. 1915.  Unusual large single slightly ruffled blooms of flesh pink showing golden anthers.  Good foliage. Large pear-shaped hips in autumn.  Summer flowering.  3.6mx3m.

Rosa 'Debutante'

Rambling rose. 1920. Distinguished clusters of small double pale pink blooms on a useful pliable rambler.  Apple-scented.  Healthy.  Summer flowering. 3.5mx3m.

Rosa 'Dortmund'

Rambling rose. Clusters of large, wavy single red blooms each with a white eye. Dark green, very healthy foliage.  Repeat flowering. 3m x 1.8m. 1955

Rosa 'Duchesse de Montebello'

Gallica rose. Full, quartered cupped blooms. Blush pink on the outside fading to white at the centre of each bloom. Wonderful perfume. Summer flowering. 1.2m x 0.9m. 1829

Rosa 'Emily Gray'

Vigorous climber. Fragrant semi-double yellow flowers in summer. Excellent dark foliage.  UK 1918

Rosa 'Erfurt'

Hybrid musk. A real beauty and quite unique. Single blooms of cerise pink paling to ivory white in the centres.  Prominent yellow stamens. Always a picture of health with its shining foliage.  An excellent autumn rose. Continuous flowering. 1.2m x 1.2m.

Rosa 'Eugénie Guinoisseau'

Moss shrub rose 1864. One of the best shrub roses repeat flowering with rich crimson purple blooms. Sweetly fragrant. 1.5m x 1.5m. Vigorous and upright.

Rosa 'Evelyn'

Austin 1991. Large cupped rosette shaped blooms of silky apricot. Rich delicious tea fragrance. Strong upright bushy growth. Continuous flowering: 1.2m x 0.9m.

Rosa 'Felicia'

Hybrid Musk. A mass of shell pink fully-double blooms. Strong scent and perpetual flowering. Forms a bushy well-foliated, healthy and vigorous shrub.  Excellent for cut flowers. 1.2mx1.2m.

Rosa 'Félicité Perpetué'

Multiflora Rambler.  Vigorous. Semi-evergreen; fragrant, cream-white flowers flushed pink in summer; good dark foliage. France 1828

Rosa 'Ferdinand Pichard'

Hybrid perpetual. 1921.  Striking blooms of crimson streaked on pink background.  Full and cup shaped.  Rich scent. Perpetual flowering. 1.5m x 1.2m.

Rosa 'Francesca'

Hybrid musk. Loose, nodding flowers of apricot fading to cream.  Beautiful pointed buds.  Dark green foliage. Scented. Perpetual flowering. 1.5m x 1.2m. 1922

Rosa 'Fruhlingsduft'

Modern shrub.  1949. Creamy yellow, fully double blooms with apricot centres. Very vigorous. Fragrant and hardy.  Late spring flowering.  2.4m x 1.8m.

Rosa 'Fruhlingsmorgen'

Modern shrub. 1941.  Large single blooms of clear pink with yellow centres and maroon stamens.  Scented.  Vigorous erect growth.  Spring flowering. 1.8m x 1.2m.

Rambler. Cream-white flowers in summer. Vigorous, dark green foliage.  USA 1899.

Rosa 'Ghislaine de Féligonde'

Rambling rose. 1916. A virtually thornless multiflora. Large clusters of small double orange and yellow blooms. Healthy glossy light green foliage. Repeat flowering. 2.5mx2.5m.

Rosa 'Gruss an Aachen'

Hybrid tea. Stunning full blooms of flesh pink and cream singly and in clusters. Scented. Compact growth. Ideal for smaller gardens.

Rosa 'Guy Savoy'

Repeat clusters rich red flowers splashed white and pink. Good fragrance, healthy and vigorous.  Rare. 2009.  H:1m

Rosa 'Hermosa'

China Rose, introduced 1834. Continuously flowering, with well scented heavily-petalled pink flowers. H: 80cm

Rosa 'John Hopper'

Hybrid Perpetual introduced 1862.  Deep pink flowers are exceptionally fragrant; summer flowering with a few blooms later in the season.  H: 1.5m

Rosa 'Kathleen Harrop'

Climbing rose. A pale pink sport of Zepherine Droouhin.  Highly floriferous. Very strong raspberry fragrance. Perpetual flowering. 3m x 1.8m. 1919

Rosa 'Le Reve'

Climbing rose. Almost single blooms of pale yellow smother the plant at midsummer. Parsley green leaves and brownish wood.  Summer flowering. 2.4m x 1.8m. 1923

Rosa 'Leverkusen'

Vigorous arching climbing rose; glossy deep-green leaves.  Fragrant pale yellow flowers over an extended period.  H:3m

Rosa 'Louis XIV'

China Rose, introduced 1859. Very fragrant deep crimson flowers throughout summer.  Needs a sheltered spot and generous feeding to really thrive. H: 60cm

Climbing Hybrid Tea. Repeated flowering. Large scented, soft yellow-pink flowers.Vigorous.  UK 1954

Rosa 'Mme Legras de St Germain'

Alba rose. Perfectly formed rosette blooms of white with creamy centres on a relatively thornless shrub. Grey green foliage.  Fragrant. Useful as a large shrub or small climber. Summer flowering. 1.8m x 1.2m. Early 19th century.

Rosa 'Mme Sancy de Parabere'

Climbing rose. 1874. Flowers early in the season.  Thornless red stems. Bears large saucer shaped blooms of deep pink which are of a rosette formation. Strong scent.  Good autumn foliage.  Summer flowering. 3mx 2.4m

Damask rose. 1832. Pure white cupped flowers crammed with petals and having a green button eye. Large shrub with light green foliage.  An excellent variety. Scented. Summer flowering. 1.8m x 1.5m.

Hybrid musk. 1913. Fantastic rose with wonderful brown stems and dark green leaves providing the perfect background for the semi-double white flowers with golden stamens. Very sweet scent. Perpetual flowering. 2.5m x 1.5m.

Climbing rose. Full blooms of creamy white with a good scent. Repeat flowering. Glossy foliage. 3m x 2.5m.

Rosa 'Mrs. Oakley Fisher'

Shrub rose. 1921. Very impressive variety. Large single blooms of soft apricot with prominent amber stamens contrast well with the dark green foliage and chocolate coloured stems. Perpetual flowering. 90cm x 90cm.

Noisette introduced 1879.  Clusters of very fragrant pale pink flowers fading to white; repeat flowers well. H: 2m

Rosa 'Nevada'

Shrub rose. Large creamy white semi-double blooms when in full flush. Rarely without a bloom. Forms a large dense well foliated shrub. 2.1m x 2.4m.

Modern shrub. 1995 Harkness. Old fashioned style blooms of warm pink.  Very free flowering and healthy. Spicy tea scent. Continuous flowering.  90cm x 90cm.

1979.  A very healthy dense plant almost constantly in flower. Clusters of semi-double scented blooms of pink with paler centres. Good dark green glossy foliage. H; 1.2m x 1.2m.

Modern shrub. 1879. A perpetual flowering dwarf sport from Felicite et Perpetue. Clusters of double rosette blooms of pure white. Dark foliage. Compact growth. 60cmx60cm.

Rosa moyesii

Species rose. A large shrub bearing single crimson red blooms with creamy stamens. Ornamental flagon shaped hips in the autumn. A superb plant in all respects.  Summer flowering. 3m x 2.4m.

Rosa pimpinellifolia (Syn. R. spinosissima) 'Double Yellow'

Native to Europe, and noted for prickly stems so good for hedging. Double yellow flowers produced early in the season. H: 1m

Rosa sericea 'subsp. omeiensis f. pteracantha'

Species Rose.  Grown as much for its prominent winged and translucent thorns as for its single white flowers borne in spring; bright red hips. China 1822

Rosa spectabilis

Sempervirens Hybrid.   Shell-pink flowers have distinctive white centres and are produced in large clusters. Frgrant and late flowering. H: 2.5m

Rosa wichuriana

Species Rose.  Powerful climber, flowering quite late with huge numbers of fragrant white flowers.  Virtually disease free. H: 5m

Rosa x odorata 'Mutabilis'

 Attractive red-dark green foliage.  Unusual rose with single flowers variable in colour through honey yellow, orange and pinky red. Significantly shade tolerant.  China 1932. 1.5m. Continuous flowering.
