Shrubs

The nursery stocks a wide range of hardy shrubs, including some unusal varieties. This list changes as we restock different species and varieties. Please ask if we do not have your shrub on the list as we can usually help with special orders, or we may have shrubs in smaller numbers which aren’t on the list.

Most of our shrubs are in the price range of £5.00 to £15.00. They come in a variety of sizes from 2 litre pots to 10 litre pots. Some larger shrubs may be more than £15.00. Please phone for an exact price and availability.

Albizia julibrissin Rosea

Very elegant shrub or small tree, doing best in a warm south-facing and sheltered aspect, preferably on poor soil (sic.) Candy-pink flowers in summer. Hardy to -10 degrees C; height probably about 2m in East Anglia.

Amorpha fruticosa Bastard Indigo. Multi-stemmed shrub noted for attractive foliage and racemes of dark purple or occasionally white or blue flowers. Prune hard in spring. Fully hardy. H:4m

Argyrocytisus battandieri

Aronia arbutifolia Red Chokeberry. Native to open woodland of Minnesota. Upright deciduous shrub up to 3m. Dense cluster of white or pinkish flowers in April-May. Bright red fruits in September-October. Bright red foliage in Autumn. Hardy.

Artemisia schmidtiana 'Nana' Compact form of the well-loved hardy perennial, noted for its fine and feathery aromatic silvery-green foliage. Best in full sun and well drained soil. H: 25cm.

Aucuba japonica 'Rozannie' Excellent for shady dry conditions, although will tolerate all but water-logged conditions. Glossy dark green leaves; bisexual; poisonous. Red berries in autumn. Hardy. H+W 1m.

Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' Smoke Bush. Good specimen plant with rich dark red-purple foliage; scarlet in autumn. Small grey-green flowers producing smoke-like appearance. H:5m. Hardy. AGM. Well-drained. Sun or partial shade.

Cotoneaster 'Cornubia' Vigorous semi-evergreen medium-large shrub or small tree. Masses of white flowers in Spring, followed by equally showy red berries in autumn - much favoured by the birds. H: probably 3m+

Cotoneaster conspicuus Evergreen shrub from S.E. Xizang, China. Small glossy green leaves and brialliant red berries. May reach 2m in cultivation or cut back to desired size. Fully hardy.

Cotoneaster lacteus Evergreen arching shrub with attractive oval dark green leaves. Small cup shaped flowers in the spring followed by red fruits in large clusters autumn-winter. Hardy. Full sun. Well drained soil. H:2.5m.

Deutzia 'Strawberry Fields' A beautiful hardy shrub that will produce masses of pretty pink/white flowers in early summer. Ideal for smaller gardens as the maximum height is unlikely to exceed 1-1.5m. Plant in full sun.

Hydrangea aspera 'Subsp. Sargentiana' Striking medium shrub suitable for partial shade. Large blue green leaves (upto 30 cm). Violet-pink and white sterile flowers in a large head 20cm across in mid-late summer. Hardy to -15C.

Hydrangea aspera 'Villosa Group' Deciduous upright shrub with peeling bark. Flowers in late summer. Flowers usually purplish, sometimes white in flat heads 25cm across. Hairy leaves to 30cm long. Good soil including chalk. H:3m

Hydrangea heteromalla Hardy shrub from the Himalaya, growing to about 3m in sun or part-shade. Flowers in summer are pink to white. Rare in UK horticulture, these plants were raised from seed on the nursery. Fully hardy.

Kolkwitzia amabilis 'Pink Cloud' Deciduous shrub from Hubei, China, bearing masses of deep pink flowers in late spring and early summer. Well drained soil and full sun preferred. Fully hardy. H:3m

Lavandula angustifolia 'Blue Rider' Striking lavender for a sunny dry location. Grey green leaves. Lavender-blue flowers showing distinctly over the darker purple flower buds. H:60cm. Hardy.

Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote' One of the great classic plants of the English garden. Compact, aromatic, evergreen shrub, with deep purple-blue flowers throughout summer. Cut back by about one-quarter in September. Highly scented. H: about 40cm.

Lavandula stoechas 'Helmsdale' Vigorous grower with very large dark blue-burgundy flowers. Grey aromatic foliage. H:90cm. Full sun. Well drained soil.

Ligustrum 'Vicaryi' Semi-evergreen shrub with greenish yellow leaves. White flowers in summer followed by blueish fruit. Prefers full sun and moist but well drained soil. Fully hardy. H:3m

Ligustrum lucidum Chinese Privet. Handsome evergreen shrub or tree, with panicles of lightly fragrant white flowers in summer. Large glossy leaves. Full sun or light shade; well drained soil and full sun. Fully hardy. H: 10m

Lonicera nitida 'Lemon Beauty'

Lonicera x purpusii Semi evergreen shrub with dark green leaves. Very fragrant cream flowers in mid-winter. H:2m. Hardy. Well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Winter interest.

Magnolia 'Betty'

Magnolia kewensis 'Wada's Memory' Large deciduous shrub or small tree. Superb drooping white flowers in spring. Tapering leaves unfurl bronzy-red then turn green. Prefers reasonably moist soil and resents lime or chalk. AGM Fully hardy. H: 3-5m

Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra' Compact and deciduous with dark green leaves. Dark purple flowers in early summer and occasionally into Autumn. H:3m. Hardy. Moist acid-neutral soil. Sun or partial shade. Sheltered position.

Magnolia sieboldii A beautiful, large deciduous shrub from Japan; large white scented flowers from May to July. As a woodland specialist it prefers dappled shade and reasonably moist soil. Fully hardy. H: probably growing to 2-3m

Magnolia stellata Large shrub to small tree, producing numerous star-shaped white flowers in spring. Native to mountain woodlands in Japan. Best in a sheltered position and not on chalk. H: up to 5m but probably less in Norfolk.

Osmanthus decorus Dense evergreen spreading shrub with leathery glossy dark green leaves. Tubular white flowers in mid spring followed by black fruit. H:3m. Sun or partial shade. Shelter from cold drying winds. Hardy.

Paeonia delavayi var. ludlowii Tree Peony. Deciduous upright shrub. Attractive divided leaves. Single bowl shaped yellow flowers in early summer. H:2m. W:1.2m. Hardy. Sun or partial shade. Rich well drained soil will produce best results.

Philadelphus 'Mont Blanc'

Philadelphus 'Silberregen' A very pretty, fragrant shrub, bearing masses of small, fragrant flowers in early summer. Quite happy in dappled shade or full sun in a reliably moist soil. Cut out old wood after flowering to encourage new growth. H: 1-2m but can be cut back to suit.

Philadelphus 'Virginal' Vigorous and upright deciduous shrub. Very fragrant double pure white flowers are borne in early summer. Sun or partial shade. Hardy. Well drained soil. Cut 1/3 of old wood out each spring. AGM H:3m.

Phlomis fruticosa Evergreen shrub with furry grey-green leaves. In summer an abundance of dark golden yellow hooded flowers on tall stems. Prefers full sun and well drained soil. Hardy. H:60cm-1m.
