Shrubs

The nursery stocks a wide range of hardy shrubs, including some unusual varieties. This list changes as we restock different species and varieties. Please ask if we do not have your shrub on the list as we can usually help with special orders, or we may have shrubs in smaller numbers which aren’t on the list.

Most of our shrubs are in the price range of £5.00 to £15.00.  They come in a variety of sizes from 2 litre pots to 10 litre pots. Some larger shrubs may be more than £15.00. Please phone for an exact price and availability.

Abelia chinensis

Spreading deciduous shrub, glossy dark green leaves. Bears fragrant, funnel-shaped pink-white flowers from summer through to autumn.  Plant in full sun with shelter from cold winter wind.  Prune in early spring.  H: 1.5m

Abelia floribunda

Striking hardy evergreen-semi evergreen shrub. Abundant cerise tubulant flowers, up to 5cm long. Best in full sun - along a warm wall.  Medium sized.

Abelia x grandiflora 'Edward Goucher'

A really useful evergreen shrub for a sunny and moist but well drained position. Arching stems bear mid-green foliage and sprays of purple-pink flowers in late summer to autumn.  H1-2m

Abelila triflora

A rare and unusual hardy, deciduous shrub from the NW Himalaya.  Very fragrant white flowers, tinged pink are produced in threes ('triflora') in early summer.  Medium sized.

Abeliophyllum distichum

White 'Forsythia'. Fragrant pinky-white flowers are produced in late winter and early spring before the leaves. Very attractive open spreading shrub - winter interest. Hardy. Sun. Well-drained soil. H:1.5m.

Abutilon vitifolia Album

Shrubby perennial. Large  white mallow flowers reaching a height of 1.5m. Full sun and well drained soil. Flowers in early summer.

Acacia dealbata

Mimosa.  Open, evergreen tree or large shrub, with very fine blue-green foliage, and fragrant, spherical flowerheads in spring. Grow in a sheltered, sunny position in well drained soil. Frost hardy. H: 3-5m in E. Anglia

Acca sellowiana

Pineapple guava. Hardy evergreen shrub that enjoys full sun. In wam conditions will bear very pretty white and red flowers. Fruit are edible and considered a delicacy in the plant's native S. America. H: 3m

Acer palmatum Atropurpureum

Japanese maple.  Rounded and deciduous tree with deeply lobed, deep purple to red leaves. Brilliant red autumn colour. Fully hardy. H:8m

Red Chokeberry. Native to open woodland of Minnesota. Upright deciduous shrub up to 3m.  Narrow dark green leaves. Dense cluster of white or pinkish flowers in April-May.  Bright red fruits in September, brilliant autumn colours. Hardy.

Aronia melanocarpa 'Autumn Magic'

Black chokeberry.  Excellent upright shrub. Glossy green leaves turning vivid purple and red in the autumn.  White flowers early summer, then black berries. Fully hardy. Sun or partial shade and moist and well drained soil preferred. H: 2-3m.

Artemisia schmidtiana 'Nana'

Compact form of the well-loved hardy perennial, noted for its fine and feathery aromatic silvery-green foliage. Best in full sun and well drained soil.  H: 25cm.

Berberis frikartii 'Telstar'

Small dense shrub with glossy dark green leaves, white beneath.  Spreading habit but compact. Pale yellow flowers in early summer. H:1.2m.  Full sun or semi shade.  Well drained soil. Hardy.12

Berberis microphylla 'Pygmaea (Syn. B buxifolia Nana)'

Compact deciduous shrub; mid-green foliage and masses of orange-yellow flowers in spring. Full hardy.  Prefers full sun. H: about 1,

Vigorous deciduous shrub with red-purple leaves turning crimson in autumn. Pale yellow flowers in Spring. H+W: 2.5m. Sun and well-drained soil. AGM

Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea Nana'

Rounded deciduous shrub with red-purple foliage. Great in a light shady corner. Partial shade or sun. Well drained soil. H:1.5m. W:2m. Hardy.

Berberis thunbergii ‘Golden Rocket’

Prickly low deciduous shrub with bright golden foliage. Does not scorch in the sun. Sun or semi-shade. Upright habit. H:1m. Hardy.

Berberis thunbergii ‘Rose Glow’

Deciduous compact shrub, red-pink leaves, splashed pink and white. Red berries in autumn/winter.  Prefers full sun. Fully hardy. H:2.5m

Berberis verruculosa

Medium-sized hardy shrub for most positions in the garden; drooping stems with dark green glossy leaves; very pretty primrose yellow flowers in spring. Native to western China, H:1.5m

Buddleia 'Lochinch'

Fine, large  shrub with arching branches with pale silver-green foliage. Large lavender blue flower with orange eyes in mid summer through to autumn. Cut back hard in mid-March. H:2.5m. AGM

Buddleia alternifolia

Large deciduous shrub or small tree bearing abundant, fragrant lilac-coloured flowers on previous year's growth. Prefers full sun and moist but well drained soil.  Native to China.  AGM

Buddleia davidii 'White Bouquet'

Deciduous shrub with silvery-green lance shaped leaves. Large white flower panicles in mid summer.  Best in full and moist but well drained soil. Cut back hard in mid-March. Hardy. H:2m.

Buddleia lindleyana

Upright arching shrub, panicles of dark violet flowers are borne in late summer. Fully Hardy. Prefers full sun. Native to China. H: up to 2m

Buddleia ‘Lochinch’

Fine, large  shrub with arching branches with pale silver-green foliage. Large lavender blue flower with orange eyes in mid summer through to autumn. Cut back hard in mid-March. H:2.5m. AGM

Buxus sempervirens

Dense evergreen shrub with deep green mature leaves.   Slow-growing and ideal for low hedging, topiary or as a formal subject a pot. Fully Hardy. Grows well in shade.

Callicarpa bodinieri 'var. giraldii 'Profusion''

Bushy deciduous shrub bearing pale pink flowers and freely producing dark violet-blue fruit in autumn. Bronze leaves when young. H:3m. Well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. AGM

Calycanthus floridus

Carolina Allspice. Bushy and deciduous with dark green leaves.Sweet scented brown-red flowers  in summer. Fragrant dry wood. H:2.5m. Hardy. Moist humus-rich soil in sun.

Camellia ‘Cornish Snow’

Hardy evergreen shrub that will thrive in moist, rich soils, either in partial shade or if the soil does not dry out in summer, full sun - mulching would be a good idea!. Masses of pure white flowers from late winter into spring. H: 1-2m

Carpenteria californica

Lovely evergreen shrub with lance shaped glossy green leaves. Bears cup-shaped fragrant white flowers in early-mid summer. Frost hardy. Full sun. Well-drained soil. AGM. H:2m.

Medium sized evergreen shrub. Narrow dark green leaves, arching branches. Profuse deep blue flowers from red buds. Full sun.  Well drained soil. AGM

Medium-sised evergreen shrub with small glossy dark green leaves and prominently dark blue flowers in early to mid-summer.  Best in full sun and sheltered from northerly winds.  Hardy.  H: about 2m

Vigorous and deciduous shrub with abundant flushes of pale blue flowers from mid-summer to autumn.  Best protected from cold winter winds. AGM. H:1.5m

Shrub or small tree, with rounded, heart-shaped leaves.  Profuse deep pink flowers in spring emerge, unusually, direct from woody stems.  Hardy. Slow growing but reaching perhaps 2-3m in time

Cistus ladanifer 'Blanche'

Large, evergreen sun-loving shrub with narrow, slightly sticky dark green leaves.  Large pure white flowers in early summer with bright yellow stamens. Best in well drained and even poor soils. H: up to 2m.

Clerodendrum bungei

Rather lovely deciduous vigorous shrub producing dark green oval-tapering leaves which are purplish when young. Rosy-red fragrant flowers in mid to late summer.  H:2m

Clerodendrum trichotomum fargesii

Upright bushy vigorous shrub with bronze-purple young leaves turning to dark green. Fragrant white flowers with green sepals in erect clusters  from late summer-autumn. Blue berries in late Autumn.Hardy. H:5-6m. China. Humus rich soil. Full sun.

Clethra alnifolia 'Anne Bidwell'

Beautiful fully hardy shrub from North America.  Large racemes of fragrant white flowers in mid to late summer, good for butterflies and bees. Enjoys full sun or light shade but not chalky soils.  H: up to 2m eventually

Vigorous, upright, deciduous shrub. Grey-green leaves, irregular white margins. White flowers in early summer. Hardy. H:3m. Tolerant but best in full sun.

Vigorous upright deciduous shrub;  brilliant scarlet stems in winter, red autumn foliage and white flowers in spring. Well drained soil in full sun. H+W:3m

Cornus sericea ‘White Gold’

Vigorous hardy shrub, with green leaves edged white and cheerful yellow winter stems. Cut back hard in mid-spring or leave alone to fill larger spaces.  H:2m Spread: 3m

Cornus canadensis

Creeping Dogwood. Attractive rhizomatous perennial; low growing. Mid green leaves. Green flowers with white bracts in late spring. Moist soil in dappled shade - but not on chalk.. Hardy. H:15cm.

Cornus capitata

Very attractive shrub or, in sheltered areas, small tree.  Grey--green foliage and flowerheads surrounded by lovely sulphur-yellow bract in mid-summer. Best in a little light shade and reasonably good soil. Hardy.

Cornus controversa

Wedding Cake Tree. One of the most beautiful of all garden plants. .Deciduous with small,  pale green leaves and good rich red-purple autumn colour. Large white flowers in early summer followed by blue fruit. Sun or partial shade. H:5-7m

Cornus controversa ‘Variegata’

An exceptionally beautiful small tree, with flat layers of branches ('tabulated') with green and silver-margined foliage. Cream flowers in May and small black fruits in autumn add further appeal. Native to China. H: 2-3m

Cornus kousa 'China Girl'

Flowering Dogwood. Deciduous tree or large shrub. H:4-7m.  Dark green oval leaves turning red in autumn. Excellent kousa cultivar with very large creamy-white flower bracts in early summer. Full sun or semi shade.  Hardy.

Cornus kousa 'chinensis'

Chinese Dogwood. Deciduous tree, producing flowers that open cream turning white then pink in early summer. Prefers sun or partial shade;. Purple/red autumn colouring. H: 7m.  Fully hardy.

Cornus kousa ‘Milky Way’

Small tree, large shrub. Deciduous.  Masses of tiny green flowers in early summer surrounded by cream flower bracts. Profuse-flowering variety. Good autumn colour. When mature strawberry-like ornamental fruits are  attractive to birds. Fertile, well-drained, neutral to acid soil. Hardy.

Cornelian Cherry. Large shrub, small tree. Lovely orange leaves in winter and delicate yellow flowers in late winter. Edible bright red fruit in summer. H:5m. Shade or sun. Hardy. AGM

Coronilla valentina subsp. Glauca 'Citrina'

Sun-loving shrub that thrives in full sun and well drained soils.  Flowers twice, in both mid-summer and again in November, with sweetly fragrant lemon-yellow flowers. Fully hardy, but resents winter waterlogging. H: 1m

Corylus avellana 'Aurea'

Yellow leaved hazel. Deciduous small tree. Fully hardy. Prefers sun or semi shade. Well drained soil. Yellow leaves. Yellow catkins in late winter. H:5m.

Corylus avellana 'Contorta'

Twisted Hazel. Attractive medium sized tree or shrub with distinctive twisted stems. Yellow catkins in late winter. H:3m. Grow in partial shade or sun. Well-drained soil. Grows well on chalk. Hardy.

Corylus colurna

Turkish Hazel. Forms a beautifully symmetrical pyramidal crown, perhaps some 10 to 15m in height eventually.  Deeply furrowed bark, dark green foliage, long male catkins in spring.  Edible nuts. Fully hardy.

Cotoneaster  Cornubia

Vigorous semi-evergreen medium-large shrub or small tree.  Masses of white flowers in Spring, followed by equally showy red berries in autumn - much favoured by the birds. H: probably  3m+

Cotinus  'Grace'

Smokebush. Fine reddish-purple leaved deciduous shrub. Beautiful burnt orangey-red in autumn. Fully hardy. Full sun or partial shade. For best effect plant where low winter sun shines through the leaves!

Cotinus coggygria 'Flame'

Deciduous shrub preferring sun or some shade.  Dull green rounded leaves which turn a gorgeous bright orangey-red in the autumn. H:3m.

Smoke Bush. Good specimen plant with rich dark red-purple foliage; scarlet in autumn. Small grey-green flowers producing smoke-like appearance. H:5m. Hardy. AGM. Well-drained. Sun or partial shade.

Evergreen arching shrub with attractive oval dark green leaves. Small cup shaped flowers in the spring followed by red fruits in large clusters autumn-winter. Happy in full sun or even quite deep shade. Hardy. H: about 2.5m.

Cytisus  'Hollandia'

Rounded deciduous shrub with arching stems bearing abundant rose-pink flowers in late spring.  Well drained (pref. acid/neutral) soil; full sun. H+W:1.5m

Daphne bholua 'Jacqueline Postill'

Originating in the Himalaya, fully hardy and evergreen shrub; relatively large pink and white flowers in late winter are intensely fragrant.   Plant in reliably moist soil if full sun or light shade.  Slow growing. H; 1-2m

Daphne laureola subsp. philippi

A useful dwarf evergreen shrub which tolerates some shade. Fragrant green-yellow flowers in late winter, early spring. Polished, leathery green leaves. Toxic if eaten and can cause an allergic skin reaction. Loamy soil - good drainage and moisture retentive. SOLD OUT

Daphne odora 'Aureomarginata'

Very lovely evergreen shrub. Mid green leaves with paler margins. Very fragrant purplish pink flowers, from dark pink buds, emerge in late winter. Full sun or part shade. H: 1.5m.  Frost hardy. Good loamy soil, moisture and good drainage.

Daphne tangutica

Slow growing evergreen shrub eventually forming a medium sized plant. Hardy. Fragrant white tinged purple flowers in spring and then later in the year. China. Prefers good loamy soil, moisture and good drainage.

Deutzia  'Rosea Plena'

Hardy deciduous shrub, best suited to a sunny position.  Masses of double pink flowers in early summer.   H: up to 2m or so.

Deutzia compacta 'Lavender Time'

Compact, deciduous and fully hardy shrub, bearing pale lavender-pink flowers in profusion in spring. Prune older stems hard after flowering.  Prefers full sun and not likely to grow more than 1m

Deutzia gracilis

Deciduous upright shrub with masses of pure white flowers in early spring. Bright green foliage turning deep red in the Autumn. Hardy. Full sun. Well drained soil. H:75cm.

Deutzia setchuenensis var. corymbiflora

Excellent flowering shrub, bearing dense heads comprising hundreds of tiny white flowers in summer. Native to forests in Hubei and Sichuan at about 800-1500m altitude. Slow-growing and compact, reaching perhaps 2m. Best in full sun and a sheltered position.

Deutzia x elegantissima 'Rosealind'

Compact and rounded decidous shrub bearing profuse pink blossom in early summer.  Full sun. H+W 1-2m

Drimys lanceolata

Mountain Pepper. Tasmania. Medium sized aromatic shrub. Upright habit, purple red shoots, dark green leaves. Evergreen. Small cream flowers April-May. Male and female on separate plants. Sheltered spot. Frost hardy.

Eleaegnus ‘Quicksilver’

Beautiful hardy sun loving deciduous shrub. Arching spreading nature with attractive silver leaves and silvery shoots. Extremely fragrant, small yellow flowers produced from silver buds in summer. H:4m. Fertile well drained soil. AGM

Eleaegnus pungens

Hardy evergreen shrub with a robust constitution, suitable for almost any situation. Small but very fragrant flowers in autumn. Native to Japan and introduced to the UK in 1830.  H: 2m

Escallonia 'Iveyi'

A medium to large evergreen shrub, with masses of fragrant white flowers in mid to late summer.  Prune in spring to maintain form or to restrict size. Prefers a warm and sheltered position. H: 2m or so.

Escallonia rubra 'var macrantha 'Crimson Spire''

Evergreen and vigorous. Bears small bright green leaves and deep red flowers from early to mid-summer. H:3m. Frost hardy. Protect from cold winds. Full sun and well drained soil.

Eucryphia lucida 'Pink Cloud'

Compact, evergreen shrub  bearing beautiful, open, cup-shaped pink flowers in late summer. Prefers shelter from cold wind, and full sun.  Relatively rare in cultivation and much sought after. Hardy. H: 3-6m

Eucryphia x nymansensii 'Nymansay'

Compact, evergreen tree or large shrub, bearing beautiful, open, cup-shaped white flowers in late summer.  Shelter from cold wind and plant in full sun. Rare and very desirable. Hardy. H: 3-6m

Winged Spindle. Deciduous shrub cultivated for autumn foliage. Dark green leaves turning brilliant dark red. Corky winged shoots. H:2m; W:3m. Hardy. Well-drained soil; full sun or partial shade. AGM

Euonymus europaeus

Common Spindle Tree. Deciduous shrub; green angular branches with corky stripes. Yellow-green flowers in Spring. Pink fruits with orange arils in autumn. Bright red autumn foliage. Hardy. Full sun.

Euonymus europaeus 'Red Cascade'

Deciduous with spreading pendent shoots. Oval dark green leaves turning bright red in autumn. Attractive 4-lobed red fruit. H:3m W:2.5m.Well-drained soil. Full sun or partial shade. AGM.

Euonymus fortunei ‘Silver Queen’

Useful robust evergreen shrub, with attractive green leaves edged with white - often with a pink tinge in winter. Tolerates most conditions. Clip back occasionally to encourage new growth. H: 1-2m

Euonymus phellomanus

Large-medium sized deciduous shrub. H:5m. Corky winged branches. Long oval leaves. Lobed pink flowers with dark brown and red seeds. Hardy.

Euonymus planipes

Fully hardy shrub from China.  Distinctive pointed leaf buds, green leaves turn fiery red in autumn; Large red fruit in autumn with bright orange papery sheaths.  H:2.5m. Choice shrub!

Euphorbia amygdaloides 'Purpurea'

Striking hardy perennial, with deep red-tinted semi-evergreen foliage. Early summer sees brilliant apple-green bracts surround masses of flowers to make a dramatic contrast. H:65cm

Euphorbia characias 'ssp. wulfenii'

Handsome, architectural evergreen perennial, best suited to a sunny and well drained spot.  Large clusters of lime green flowers. Fully hardy. H:1m

Euphorbia sikkimensis

Beautiful, arching mound forming deciduous shrub. Racemes of white flowers in late spring and early summer. H:3m. Hardy. Full sun.

Garrya issaquahensis ‘Glasnevin Wine’

Hardy evergreen that can be grown against a wall or as a free standing shrub; dark green, leathery foliage and pale green with purplish tassel flowers in winter. Protect from cold northerly winds. H:2-3m

Genista aetnensis

Mount Etna Broom.  Large shrub with slender green leafless shoots. Fragrant yellow flowers are borne profusely in late summer. (Sardinia and Sicily) VERY LIMITED STOCK

Witch Hazel. Attractive bright green leaves turning orange-red in autumn. Unusual crimped fragrant coppery orange flowers in midwinter. H:4m. Acid to neutral and moist but well-drained soil preferred. Sun or partial shade. AGM

Witch Hazel. Attractive mid green leaves turning orange to yellow and red in autumn. Unusual crimped fragrant sulphur-yellow-greenish flowers in midwinter. H:4m. Acid or neutral soil. Sun or partial shade.

Helianthemum 'Wisley Primrose'

Low-growing, evergreen, dwarf shrub for a hot sunny location; lots of primrose-yellow flowers in summer. Ideal for a rockery, or over the edge of a low wall.  Clip back after flowering.  H: 15cm; W: up to 1m

Helichrysum italicum 'Korma'

Compact evergreen subshrub with aromatic and silvery narrow  leaves. Yellow flowerheads summer to autumn.  Hardy. Full sun. Well-drained soil. H:40cm.

Heptacodium miconioides

Seven Son Flower of Zhejiang. Hardy shrub for full sun or light shade. Bears fragrant creamy white flowers in late August followed by vivid red seed capsules and persistent pink flower bracts until to mid-November. H:2-3m+

Hoheria  'Ace of Spades'

Evergreen shrub, native to New Zealand.  Prefers a warm and sheltered spot and will bear an abundance of small white flowers in late summer.  Hardy to -10c.  H: probably 2-3m in East Anglia

Viburnum plicatum 'Shasta'

Widely regarded as the best of the 'plicatum' viburnums. Profuse white flowering, with a layering habitat.  Allow a couple of metresor more  around as in time it will form a substantial and very beautiful plant.  Fully hardy.
