Shrubs

The nursery stocks a wide range of hardy shrubs, including some unusal varieties. This list changes as we restock different species and varieties. Please ask if we do not have your shrub on the list as we can usually help with special orders, or we may have shrubs in smaller numbers which aren’t on the list.

Most of our shrubs are in the price range of £5.00 to £15.00.  They come in a variety of sizes from 2 litre pots to 10 litre pots.  Some larger shrubs may be more than £15.00. Please phone for an exact price and availability.

Abelia floribunda

Abeliophyllum distichum

White 'Forsythia'. Fragrant white flowers are produced in late winter and early spring before the leaves. Very attractive open spreading shrub - winter interest. Hardy. Sun. Well-drained soil. H:1.5m.

Acradenia frankliniae

Large evergreen shrub, well suited to a sheltered and warm spot - against a south-facing wall for example; dark green shiny foliage and flat heads of small white flowers in early summer.

Amelanchier  'canadensis'

Vigorous suckering shrub, frequently confused with A. lamarckii. Attractive white flowers in spring and blue-black fruit in autumn.  E. North America. Fully Hardy. H:6m

Amorpha fruticosa

Bastard Indigo.  Multi-stemmed shrub noted for attractive foliage and racemes of dark purple or occasionally white or blue flowers.  Prune hard in spring. Fully hardy. H:4m

Aronia melanocarpa

Black chokeberry.  Excellent upright shrub. Glossy green leaves turning purple. White flowers early summer, then black berries. H:2m. W:3m. Hardy. Sun or partial shade. Moist and well drained soil.

Artemisia schmidtiana 'Nana'

Compact form of the well-loved hardy perennial, noted for its fine and feathery aromatic silvery-green foliage. Best in full sun and well drained soil.  H: 25cm.

Berberis frikartii 'Telstar'

Small dense shrub with glossy dark green leaves, white beneath.  Spreading habit but compact. Pale yellow flowers in early summer. H:1.2m.  Full sun or semi shade.  Well drained soil. Hardy.12

Large deciduous shrub or small tree bearing abundant, fragrant lilac-coloured flowers on previous year's growth. Prefers full sun and moist but well drained soil.  Native to China.  AGM

Sun loving shrub, with deep green foliage and bright blue flowers in mid to late summer.  Fully hardy.  Cut back in spring to encourage flowering. H: about 1m.

Dense, evergreen shrub, bearing masses of brilliant blue flowers in summer.  Best in full sun.  Fully Hardy.  Will grow to around 2 to 3m in height.

Pagoda Dogwood. Deciduous  shrub or small tree. Green leaves turning red-purple in autumn. White flowers in flat cymes early summer, followed by black fruit. Hardy. H:6m. Sun or part. shade.

Creeping Dogwood. Attractive rhizomatous perennial; low growing. Mid green leaves. Green flowers with white bracts in late spring. Moist soil in dappled shade - but not on chalk.. Hardy. H:15cm.

Hazel. Attractive medium sized tree bearing long yellow catkins in late winter. H:5m. Grow in partial shade or sun. Well-drained soil. Grows well on chalk. Hardy.

Yellow leaved hazel. Deciduous small tree. Fully hardy. Prefers sun or semi shade. Well drained soil. Yellow leaves. Yellow catkins in late winter. H:5m.

Twisted Hazel. Attractive medium sized tree or shrub with distinctive twisted stems. Yellow catkins in late winter. H:3m. Grow in partial shade or sun. Well-drained soil. Grows well on chalk. Hardy.

Turkish Hazel. Forms a beautifully symmetrical pyramidal crown, perhaps some 10 to 15m in height eventually. Deeply furrowed bark,  dark green foliage, long male catkins in spring.  Edible nuts. Fully hardy.

Very attractive small deciduous shrubby tree. Vigorous. Deep purple leaves and purplish catkins. Edible nuts in the autumn. H: 6m. Hardy. Full sun.

Cotinus coggygria 'Flame'

Deciduous shrub preferring sun or some shade.  Dull green rounded leaves which turn a gorgeous bright orangey-red in the autumn. H:3m.

Vigorous semi-evergreen medium-large shrub or small tree.  Masses of white flowers in Spring, followed by equally showy red berries in autumn - much favoured by the birds. H: probably 3m+

A useful dwarf evergreen shrub which tolerates some shade. Fragrant green-yellow flowers in late winter, early spring. Polished, leathery green leaves. Toxic if eaten and can cause an allergic skin reaction. Loamy

soil - good drainage and moisture retentive.

 

Daphne odora 'Aureomarginata'

Very lovely evergreen shrub. Mid green leaves with paler margins. Very fragrant purplish pink flowers, from dark pink buds, emerge in late winter.  Full sun or part shade. H: 1.5m.  Frost hardy. Good loamy soil, moisture and good drainage.

Daphne tangutica

Slow growing evergreen shrub eventually forming a medium sized plant. Hardy. Fragrant white tinged purple flowers in spring and then later in the year. China. Introduced by Wilson in early 1900s. Good loamy soil,

moisture and good drainage.

Deutzia  'rosa plena'

Attractive medium sized shrub, noted for its purple-red foliage. Best grown in a sheltered spot (not a frost pocket) and a well drained soil. H:1-2m.  Will take -2degrees C.

Vigorous deciduous shrub with brown-scaly shoots and silver-green wavy-margined leaves. Yellow-white flowers in late spring. Silvery fruit turning red. H:5m. Hardy. Full sun. Well-drained.

Emmenopterys henryi

A rare and beautiful small tree or large shrub from China, Atrractive young bronze foliage and flatiish to pyramidal corymbs of white flowers. Will do best in a sheltered site. Fully hardy to -15C when mature. H: 6-8m

Fully hardy shrub from China.  Distinctive pointed leaf buds, green leaves turn fiery red in autumn; Large red fruit in autumn with bright orange papery sheaths.  H:2.5m. Choice shrub!

Euphorbia characias 'ssp. wulfenii'

Handsome, architectural evergreen perennial, best suited to a sunny and well drained spot.  Large clusters of lime green flowers. Fully hardy. H:1m

Euphorbia mellifera

Evergreen shrub attaining 2m; brown honey-scented flowers in late spring.  Prefers full sun in well drained soil. Frost hardy to -5°C.

Euphorbia robbiae

Rhizomatous spreading woody evergreen perennial. Glossy dark green leaves.  Bright apple green flowers in early spring. Good ground coverer in freely draining site.  Sun preferred.  H:40cm.

Upright shrub with striking blue-green toothed leaves; fragrant white flowers  in early summer.  Moist but well-drained soil in sun or shade preferred - chalky soils not recommended . Fully Hardy. H: 1m

Gardenia jasminoides 'Kleim's Hardy'

A wonderful evergreen shrub for a sheltered position.  Waxy, white, very fragrant jasmine-like flowers from late spring into the summer.  Plant in a rich, fertile, neutral-acid soil in dappled shade. Not frost tolerant. H:1m.

 

Genista aetnensis

Mount Etna Broom.  Large shrub with slender green leafless shoots. Fragrant yellow flowers are borne profusely in late summer. (Sardinia and Sicily)

Witch Hazel. Attractive mid green leaves turning orange to yellow and red in autumn. Unusual crimped fragrant sulphur-yellow-greenish flowers in midwinter. H:4m. Acid or neutral soil. Sun or partial shade. AGM

Heptacodium miconioides

Hardy shrub for full sun or light shade. Bears fragrant creamy white flowers in late August followed by vivid red seed capsules and persistent pink flower bracts until to mid-November.  Tolerant of most conditions. H:2-3m+

Hoheria sexstylosa

Ribbon Wood. Very attractive ornamental tree. Glossy dark red bark often overlaid with exfoliating silver-grey strips.  Profuse, fragrant white flowers in summer when mature.  Full sun and sheltered position.  H: about 4m

Holodiscus discolor 'var. ariifolius'

Ocean Spray. Large panicles of white flowers are borne on slender arching branches in mid-summer. H:4m. Sun or partial shade. Moist well-drained soil. Hardy.

Beautiful shade-adapted shrub, bearing softy hairy leaves and large flowerheads of lilac and white.  Very easy to grow in sheltered, lightly shaded moist but well drained soil. Fully hardy. H:up to 2.5m

Hydrangea aspera 'Villosa Group'

Deciduous upright shrub with peeling bark. Flowers in late summer. Flowers usually purplish, sometimes white in flat heads 25cm across. Hairy leaves to 30cm long. Good soil including chalk. H:3m

Hydrangea heteromalla

Hardy shrub from the Himalaya, growing to about 3m in sun or part-shade. Striking velvety long leaves.  Flowers in summer are pink-white-cream. Rare in UK horticulture, these plants were raised from seed on the nursery. Fully hardy.

Very attractive late flowering deciduous shrub. Large creamy white flower panicles in late summer-autumn, later changing to pink. Prefers partial shade. Hardy. H:60cm.

Hydrangea paniculata 'Wim's Red'

A new variety, noted for flowers that open white in May/June, age to light pink through summer and turn deep red in autumn, especially if grown in a sunny spot.  Autumn foliage is also very vivid red and orange.H:1.5m

Oak-leaved hydrangea. Mound forming and deciduous. Deeply lobed green leaves turning purple in autumn. Tall white panicles of flowers occur mid-summer-autumn. Hardy. H:1m W:1.5m. Sun or shade. Moist soil.

Hydrangea seemannii

Evergreen climbing hydrangea for shady conditions - ideal for a sheltered north wall.  Glossy, leathery leaves, panicles of white flowers in summer. Quite slow growing so easily kept under control.  H: probably 2-3m  but possibly more in time.

Ilex aquifolium 'Handsworth New Silver'

Robust shrub or small, slow growing tree. Dense, dark purple stems, deep green leaves with creamy margins.  Bright red berries in autumn. Prefers moist but well drained soil in full sun for best colour. Fully hardy. H:8m

Ilex aquifolium 'Pyramidalis'

A free flowering and fruiting self-fertile form of holly; bright green spiny leaves and red fruit. Will make a large shrub or small tree. Conical when young but broadening in maturity. Fully hardy and very tolerant.

Ilex meserveae 'Blue Maid'

An hermaphrodite form of holly so it really should bear berries! Blue-ish stems, glossy dark green foliage and red berries. Fully hardy. H: in time will make a small tree.

Kerria japonica 'Golden Guinea'

Deep yellow fading to cream flowering upright, deciduous shrub.  Bright green leaves turning yellowish in the Autumn. Flowers are c. 6cm wide in April-May. Very eye catching. Hardy. Full sun. H:2m

Kolkwitzia amabilis 'Pink Cloud'

Deciduous shrub from Hubei, China, bearing masses of deep pink flowers in late spring and early  summer. Well drained soil and full sun preferred. Fully hardy. H:3m

Laurus nobilis

Bay. Aromatic, hardy evergreen culinary shrub, grow in full sun and moist but well drained soil. Deep green leaves have a highly characteristic aroma Height: clip to any size or allow to grow into a small tree.

 

Lavandula  'Sawyers'

Small sun-loving, hardy and aromatic shrub, with distinctively silvery foliage and blue-purple flowers in summer. H+W: 60cm

Lavandula x intermedia 'Dutch Group (Vera) (syn. L. angustifolia)'

Dutch Lavender.  Vigorous. Grey aromatic leaves.  Pale blue flowers throughout the summer. Lovely for the bees. H:60cm. Hardy. Prefers full sun and well-drained soil.

Leycesteria formosa

Arching stems terminate with pendant panicles of small white flowers and burgundy-red bracts. Very handsome plant, prefers light shade. H: 2m

Ligustrum  'Vicaryi'

Semi-evergreen shrub with greenish yellow leaves.  White flowers in summer followed by blueish fruit. Prefers full sun and moist but well drained soil.  Fully hardy. H:3m

Ligustrum lucidum

Chinese Privet. Handsome evergreen shrub or tree, with panicles of lightly fragrant white flowers in summer. Large glossy leaves. Full sun or light shade; well drained soil and full sun. Fully hardy. H: 5m

Lonicera x purpusii

Semi evergreen shrub with dark green leaves. Very fragrant cream flowers in mid-winter. H:2m. Hardy. Well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Winter interest.

Magnolia kewensis 'Wada's Memory'

Large deciduous shrub or small tree. Superb drooping white flowers in spring. Tapering leaves unfurl bronzy-red then turn green. Prefers reasonably moist soil and resents lime or chalk.  AGM Fully hardy. H: 3-5m

Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra'
