A vigorous clump forming perennial with spectacular arching spiny dark green leaves. Flowering stem up to 1.5m - purple flower bracts and white inner corolla. Acanthus spinosus will grow to its fullest potential when planted in rich, deep and fertile soils, in either full sun or partial shade.

Deep and fertile soils will definitely give the best results, so if in doubt, dig in when well-rotted manure when planting and also consider mulching with well-rotted manure or garden compost in the winter. This will improve the structure, nutrient status and moisture retention capcity of the soil, as well as being good exercise!

Acanthus spinosus is fully hardy and trouble free.
