Very pretty, deciduous upright tree, ideal for smaller gardens and one of our all-round favourites for versatility. Most of the plants we sell are multi-stemmed, and we have a fine speciment growing here which indeed has four stems pretty much emerging from ground level, so such a plant more or less forms an instant 'grove effect' compared to single-stemmed specimens.
Round mid-green leaves emerge quite early in spring and are a deep red-bronze when young before turning to mid-green for the summer. The name 'cercidiphyllum' indicates that the leaves resemble Cercis, the Judas Trees, and this is quite correct, with a similar rounded shape, although much smaller than Cercis. The small leaves and quite upright and narrow habit make this tree very amenable to planting in smaller gardens as it casts only dappled shade and takes up really very little room - it is perhaps three times as high as it is wide. In autumn the leaves turn vivid orange-red and the whole trees emits a powerful 'Candy-floss' or caramel aroma as leaves turn.
Cercidiphyllum japonicum is native to China and Japan, and is regarded as threatened in the wild in China whilst reasonably abundant in Japan.
Whilst perfectly content on our neutral sandy-loam, it is said that acid soils are best for autumn colour - not a major consideration as it seems very tolerant. Plant in full sun. Cercidiphyllum japonicum is fully hardy. H: 4-8m
