Sweet gum. A lovely variation on this excellent hardy ornamental tree. In its early years the habit is pyramidal but later widening somewhat to become more conical. The crown is densely crowded with glossy green palmate leaves that in autumm will turn to rich tones of red, orange gold, yellow and purple, giving the garden a terrific burst of vibrant colour late in the year. Another notable feature of sweet gums is the dark grey, deeply grooved barked that becomes corky and ribbed with age that provides winter interest.
Liquidambar styraciflua 'Palo Alto', raised at the Saratoga Horticultural Institute, in California in 1961 is very robust and easy to grow, tolerating most soils and aspects. Fully hardy. The final height is likely to be in the region of 8-10m, with a spread of perhaps about one half the height.
