Bigleaf magnolia. A truly magnificent and very rare deciduous ornamental tree, native to the southeastern United States and eastern Mexico and boasting the largest simple leaf and the largest single flower of any native plant in North America. Leaves are bluish-green and may grow to a remarkable 80cm in length, while the flowers, borne in spring on trees some years old are fragrant, white and up to 200mm in diameter. Tolerates quite heavy shade but will thrive in full sun.
Magnolia macrophylla is fully hardy and enjoying rich, fertile and deep and, importantly, reliably moist soils with protection from strong wind - planting under the shelter of larger deciduous trees would be a smart move as this will closely resemble this species' home conditions. Height: probably 6-12m after some decades in good conditions.
