Evergreen shrub, native to China and Japan Mid green leaves with paler margins. Very fragrant purplish pink flowers, from dark pink buds, emerge in late winter. Part shade preferred, but will grow in sun. H: 1.5m. At least frost hardy, in our expereince fully hardy if sheltered from very cold northerly winds in winter. Good loamy soil, moisture-retentive and with good drainage prefered for best results.

Native of China, long cultivated in Japan; introduced from the latter country in 1771; interestingly Daphne odora ‘Aureo-Marginata’ is hardier than the parent species. This daphne can begin to flower in midwinter and continue until spring and is one of the most deliciously fragrant of evergreens.
