Houpu Magnolia .
A very rare form of magnolia, grown for it large distinctive leaves and massive white flowers whih are borne on more mature plants from May to June.
Native to the mountains and valleys of China at altitudes of 300-1500m this wonderful ornamental tree is fully hardy in the all but the coldest parts of the UK, happy down to -10C. The leaves are obovate in shape, up to 40cm long and 20cm wide, with a characterstic notch at the tip, forming two lobes, hence the name 'biloba'.
Grow Magnolia officinalis Biloba in fertile and reliably moist soils with shelter from cold wind. It will grow happily in full sun or dappled shade. The final height will be in the region 6-8m, with a similar spread.
The highly aromatic bark of Magnolia officinalis biloba has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine. Modern scientific studies have confirmed the presence of compounds with potential clinical applications.
